Hi there! This is my first post even though I have been reading this forum for a good while now.
The wealth of knowledge on here has helped me no end over the years, it's great to find such a community of knowledgeable people!
OK so you guessed it right? I have a problem with my Tradesmig that I know has been discussed on here before. I have just bought this machine to replace my old welder. I know these are getting on a bit but we have had them in work for years and they have always been reliable.
When I got it home I attempted a trial weld on a piece of 1mm mild steel that I use on car bodies. The problem is that to get a decent amount of penetration and a good quality weld I have to have the machine set on the highest setting which is obviously not right.
I have had the machine apart and checked all connections for security and corrosion and all seem ok. I have checked the no load voltages and I get 18 on the lowest setting and 32 volts on the highest which seems about right.
The only problem I can see is that one of the caps is a little crusty. I have taken him out and checked him and he does charge up ok. Unfortunately I did not have my decent multimeter with me so was unable to test further.
Is it possible that this cap is causing such low current to be available for welding? Are there any other common faults I can look for?
I will bring my decent meter home tomorrow so I can check the rectifiers etc.
Many thanks in advance!
Gavin
