I recently inherited a Sealey mighty mig 100, which runs with gas, with a wire feed problem, which i fiddled with ending up with the bit of plastic that the wire guide wheel spring things attatched to ending up broken.
I thought i'd be able to easily find a replacement plastic bit/wire feed on the web, but have been un-succesful so far. But read upon home made wooden wedges being used to ensure a nice feed can do the job.
As well as reading that the hole feed issue was probably just the lining. Read about that some more. Seems pretty simple.
So was concidering getting this lot from welduk:
0.6mm Mig Wire 0.7kg X 2 = 5.95
Mig Wire liner Plastic = 3.40
6 X 0.6 mm Tips Mini Mig = 3.05
2 X Screw on Mig Shrouds = 5.10
And starting over, hoping a wooden wedge would suffice.
However, I feel i'm going to require more than just this as i'm needing a reliable low amp mig, and not sure whether this old jobbie with a few new spangly bits and some wood wedged in helping the feed continue. I'm currently dealing with rust on a Nissan 200SX which i'm racing next year, but need to get the rust sorted asap/for MOT as i'm in the mid stages of the main rebuild, after which i'll hopefully only be changing safety equipment and the clutch. ATM i've been poorly using an Easyweld 140 ARC and seems to be doing more harm than good, with now around 5 holes blown through around one strut(doesnt help that the bodyworks thin, the arc says '25' amp min and sheet steel im using is a bit thicker than that, id guess the car is 1mm, and the stuff im using is around 1.6mm) And i've got a lot more to do, before even going near the outer sills(one side of which will require a lot of welding.
I'm wondering whether it'd be best to buy something like this:
http://www.aktivetools.com/sip-weldmate-80-amp-gas-mig-welder---06503-837-p.asp
and enjoy something a lot more consistant, as the ARC needs amp adjustment throughout the length of the rods life, start at around 40 amp, as it gets going, turn down to 25 and hope to keep some heat in the tip without blowing through.
What would you guys recommend, its basically, try and salvage this old mightymig which i messed up a little bit trying to fix.
Or
get a new 80-120A mig, but tbh i'm very stuck for money what with building the race car and all. So wouldn't want to spend much more than 125 like the above suggestion, but want to be able to control the damn thing, borrowed a friends 30-130Amp mig to weld a hole in the floorpan and while endlessly better than my ARC or a non feeding mighty mig I didn't like the lack of adjustment and managed to blow a few small holes in that.
Uses: welding bodywork, floorpan, sills, struts, subframe crossmembers(a bit beefier, ~2.5 max i'd though. A small chance of chassis rails, but still its no landrover. Will also be fabricating various brackets and mounts etc. And will need to be able to weld in a roll cage with whatever solution I go through. Bearing in mind i could use the ARC on the heavy duty stuff if needed.
Suggestions appreciated, and If mr weldequip the one with lots of praise on here, or anyone else, has a strong recommendation or product I could purchase/deal please PM me or email foxpageracing@hotmail.com
