I got asked to TIG weld a piece of work recently, it was a u shaped framework, the horizontal piece was 12 inch long and the vertical legs were about 2 feet long equally. The material was 2 inch square solid Aluminum and we (myself and the instructor) just could not make any headway. I had the machine cranked upto 260 amps with a 2.4mm electrode, the biggest they had and an Argon gas mix. I also adjusted the frequency to about 165 and the EN was quite high. Someone suggested preheating, but for Aluminum I didn't think this was the norm. The only thing I managed to do was melt the rod but I couldnt make a weld pool on the workpiece at all.
Does anyone have any ideas how we could have tackled this with the equipment that we had to hand, many thanks for all comments!
