Celly will thin anything including water. The next coat is where you get trouble.
Whether I spray (rarely),or more usually, brush I always find standard thinners reduces the gloss. Last weekend I used ULTIMATE and its water based, quite glossy.
not a problem thinning hammerite with celly thinners direct to metal. it dont like being sprayed over certain undercoats and primers though. been there and got the teeshirt
ive undercoated stuff with etch primer then sprayed hamerite thinned with celly and it wouldnt go hard . had to remove it sprayed direct and its okThanks all.. thus is a couple of axles for a friend. He is buying the Hammerite, so i just said to get some of the thinners just in case.
Interesting.. mind elaborating on this ?
Interesting.. Good to know actually. Would you say it goes a bit closer to satin? For car parts and the like, that isn't an issue.
Good to know.. although with hammerite I think I'd always go DTM.
Did you intentionally add the undercoat/ primer or was it just there already?
I'd always go DTM for Hammerite.
Gun wash is celly thinners with a fair bit of water added to reduce the price. It still thins paint, but leaves the water in the paint when dry, so next time there's a frost you get paint with value add micro blisters.Celly will thin anything including water. The next coat is where you get trouble.
You can use any thinners you like
It will still be rubbish paint. I find it is brittle and will flake off. Unsuitable for car parts. Ok for garden furniture if you dont mind recoating it every few months.
I would not be buying it, just about any other cheap paintnwill perform better including that from poundland.
That seems a bit harsh. I have read various places that people have had good results with hammerite.
Regarding your flaking off comment.
Are you sure you are prepping the steel correctly? Because I have had paint peel on stuff if I use a high speed wire brush.. it polishes the surface.
Hammerite will be going onto blaster steel here.
Actually as it turns out the guy has brought me some "rust bullet" stuff.
It is not harsh when a tin from poundland does a far better job. Yes I did prep properly, when it flaked, I asked on here, to be told it is rubbish and I regret not asking first, although the old tin was free, I now have a near full tin I have no desire to use. That seems a bit harsh.
