this guy uses MMA rod so i guess theres much more fluch on that...
Pic one face side with solid tig wire and back side protection.
Pic two root side solid tig wire back side protection
Pics 3 and 4 316 flux core front and back with no back side protection.
I couldn't get that flux core to flow at all.
No comparison what so ever.this guy uses MMA rod so i guess theres much more fluch on that...
No comparison what so ever.
He's doing a thick walled pipe with a 2.5 mm root gap at 100 amps.
Results on a stainless exhaust system on a closed joint at 40 amps are going to be somewhat very different. Don't take my word for it your welcome to try and prove otherwise. Why are you so against purging.
So you intend to make a lobster back.
It will be worth the effort of purging all those trust me.
Lobsterback exhaust bends can look really smart but they can also look awful.
Just tried with a 1.6 electrode on 2mm and it sort of worked but man it is slow and murky to work, should have scraped off one side of the flux like the guy in the video did and it would probably have been easier to see what I was doing.
Decided to try the stick on 1mm for laughs and I have found out the hot start on the wee GYS is a real pain for something daft like this as you can see on the left, it just loaded up the current and blasted right through. Turned down to 25 amps and it went a bit better as you can see on the right.
Tried a few more goes with the Tig on the 1mm and was getting better but still not great, getting a bit wide towards the end and weaving all over the plate.
Stainless with Tig is definitely something I need to practice, thicker stuff is reasonable but this thin stuff is not something I use much so ....
Just found some thin box so tried again, 1.2mm box with the 1.6 electrode but this time the flux ground off one side.
Was easier to see the weld but still a bit murky and doesn't flow nice. Think the current was too low as I never got the penetration but what there was at first looked bad but as the slag pinged off it was brighter underneath.
Still a horrible weld though and certainly not something I would be thinking about doing except for experimenting to see what it was like.
yes agreed. not against purging at all, i have everything i need to do it. Just wanted to know if there was a simpler way since i'll be doing all my bends in 9 degree pie cuts, so lots of welding and farting about with setting up the purging.
