A useful tip when welding exhausts is to use .8 stainless mig wire, it gives a tiny bead and as i polish all my exhausts the welds disappear in no time.
Hi Langy, Nice looking exhaust you got there, can you tell me the process of how you get such a nice Finnish to your exhausts as I would like to achieve the same finnish on mine, I have just bought a polishing machine but thats all at the moment no mops or anything.
I use a machine i rescued from a College, i use a 400 grit belt to scurf off the small welds and then use Sisal mops and finish with Cotton Stitch mops, the various compounds come from a mate who is a polisher/chromer. I use Red for initial cut on a Sisal and White on a Cotton Stitched.
I also use this company for supplies, they are very good and helpful http://www.thepolishingshop.co.uk/
I'm no polishing expert so just do and use what he says.
Cheers for that and what is the machine you use and what sort of rpm it run at
That is VERY nice mate!
Amazing green paintjob too. Good job.
What car are you putting it on 'Turbo'?
Sounds like it should be fun with that amount of power.
I was ordering some steel from my local fabricator yesterday and we got talking about a customers exhaust they were making- it was a 6 inch exhaust system!! I thought he made a mistake so asked him again and he said 6 inches so I said that must be running some serious power to need something that large and he said it was for a 1000bhp supra. I went to look at the exhaust and sure enough if was 6 inches- I could fit my leg into the pipe it was that big!
Cheers
Andy
Even the engines green,
Hate you Langy
just spent ages looking thru 800+ pictures,
very nice indeedy
That looks really good turbo. I am trying to do exactly the same thing at the moment, build an exhaust section so I am currently trying to get used to the settings. I think I have the same tig welder as you too so I might try those settings out. Do you use the pulse setting at all?
The main question i wanted to ask was what you used to make the purge section off your regulator. Did you put a t-piece on the main line and then a regulator on that to control the purge? Also did you feed the purge line into the tin foil or have an attachment on the end to keep it in place?
Thanks
Andy
Langy, thats some awesome work there fella, very impressive.
It's been a while since my first post so thought I would update on the progress of my first homebrew exhaust system. I opted for 3" 1.6mm 304 SS as the 6" wouldn't fit . I used mandrel bends & V band flanges throughout with a couple of flexi's thrown in for good measure. Welder was set to 32-34 Amps, 1.6mm red tungsten, torch gasflow at 5lt/min, back purge at 3lt/min for 10 minutes or so then turned down to a trickle. I tried the 0.8mm MIG wire, couldn't get to grips with it as I couldn't straighten the wire out, so was a nightmare to use! I ended using the 1.6mm filler instead. Here's some random images (I know the garage is a mess )
I'm just waiting for a V band flange to arrive that mates to my downpipe to get it finished, It seems standards could have been employed to good use here!
So what do you guys think?
Langy, Nice build. Why the pipes out the back and sides
