Trying to help my old man out. He has gone out and bought some replacement exhaust tips for his car. As they dont make the OEM trims any more he has bought some universal trims.
Problem is the exhaust is 2.5inch and the trims are 3 inch.
To avoid farting around, I was planning on drilling two holes in the exhaust trim down its length, and then spot welding the trim in these two locations to the existing exhaust pipe (mild steel). So the trim would be secured at the bottom, to the bottom of the exhaust pipe.
I have everything I need to weld mild steel - so can I get away using mild steel mig wire and gas for the spot welds or should I use stainless wire and a suitable gas?
For two spot welds, that wont be seen, should I worry about it to much about it? Am I overlooking some possible cock up?
Longevity of the weld / rust prevention isn't a concern as the car is probably going to be sold on in the coming months. Just a case of doing it quickly with the least amount of effort.
Hopefully someone can provide some sage advice.
Thanks
James
