Hi I need some help with removing spot welds. I bought spot weld removal drill but it seems to be making holes through both sheets. Maybe it's me but it would be nice to know how more experience guys do it?
I use an endmill in a drill. takes a bit of practice, it does try to wander a bit. just go lightly, don't break all the way through then pop the welds using a pry bar between the 2 skins.
one has a sprung point and a cutter, the other is a drill bit that has been sharpened to a small center point and a tip at the outer edge.
Both do much the same job.
you need to centre punch the spot weld to hold the centre of the drill. Then drill into the spot weld. the outer egde of the drill should cut deeper than the rest of the drill and cur round the outside of the weld. I find it helps to angle the drill and move it round in a circular motion.
This should achieve a cut in the top layer of the weld and leave a button weld to the bottom layer. simply grind the buttons off when the panel is completely removed.
The drills are not designed to remove the whole of the weld. this is probably why you are going through both sheets.
when drilling watch the swarf coming out, there will inevitably be a point where the swarf goes rusty, you then know you've hit the other panel. Stop drilling and then pop the panels apart with a chisel
as has been said, watch what you are drilling. look for either. the hole being the rough thickness of the steel or it changing colour for a brief moment to show you some rust. I also find slowly rotating the drill around the hole helps.
I cut my own drill bits, I leave a sharp point in the centre to keep it from wandering and then a sharp outer circle so it cuts the outside of the spot weld, I stop when I see the puff of rusty dust
Thank you all for help I bought clarke spot weld cutter set from machine mart I started with mill cutter I used it in stead of my centre punch I used the other drill/cutter the one with a pilot pin to do the rest of the job. It was still a struggle but the panel is out. Once again thank you all for help.
If you're not trying to save both panels then a hammer and wood chisel would probably work.I use to use my snap on gasket scraper for spot weld breaking, surprisingly its taken the abuse well.
