single phase or get a single phase converter?

hi looking at buying a new welder but can decide weather to buy a single phase machine as only have single phase in workshop or do i go down road of getting one of them converters and getting a 3 phase machine? can i do that not looked into it that much. any help would be good.

You need a huge supply and converter to run a welder.

for an aplication like a welder stick with single phase .converters are ok to a degree but big ££££and getting the right one

What size material are you thinking of welding?

weld anything from 1mm to 12mm all welders i have are single phase just fancied getting more choice there only limited range of welders under title single phase heading, also fancied one of the ones with a separate wire feed box.

We (Lorch) do a 250 amp 230v supply with separate feeder.

We have never done it in a production environment at our place in Cannock as we only have 230v 16 amp supply but have never tripped the RCD welding around 12mm thick with a 1.0mm steel wire in a true Spray mode

Technical Arc also do some large 230v Transformers

Its a business...when 'just fancied' becomes 'desperately needed to earn money', thats when you buy one

A previous employer had Migatronic and Oerlikon machines with separate feeders. in single phase. 32a supply. Reasonable machines too, think the migatronic was about 280a.
Used to be used for buildings 90% of the time.


Have you looked into a 3ph supply being installed?

its a welder it earns me money whether its one i fancy buying or one i need to buy makes no difference it gets paid for with work!!! as for 3 pahse supply hmm no not really looked into it well have a little everyone i talk to saws it cost a arm and a leg.

You might be lucky I know a couple of garages that had a three phase supply but only one meter. So easy job to get three

if that is the case u would have 3 fuses in the main cutout not just the one and only one fuse being used for single phase

my workshop is at a farm the farm has 3 phase but problem is my workshop is over the other end of farm so mean quite bit of cable.
