Yes would need the same internal switching pattern the switch you have probably disconnects every other connection as it engages another test to make sure
I think you may have been looking at mikes picture re the heat damageI think you may be missing the root of the problem. Often a switch fails because part of the welding transformer itself has failed (dead short to another winding) this causes the switch to melt its contacts on one or more positions.
The set may well function at switch settings lower, and at reduced voltage on higher settings but looking at the heat damage on the transformer itself I'd say you need a transformer and switch.
