Yup. If they're owt like the others, that feature won't have lasted long, and it's not something I can recall seeing before on a 6".

There's a picture of a swindens in the 1930 B&H catalogue with the details cast in the front and also interestingly it has no anvil ....

The Samsonia is English made by J Parkinsons, Shipley Iron Works, West Yorkshire and is Known as the 'Rolls Royce' of Vices

the Model J No38 and the Model J No38A.

Now the No 38 definately has 6" jaws and the 38A has some odd size neither imperial or metric but definately over 5 inches

Oops. I missed the 3 from 38A. Yours will be the 38A if it's 6" jaws? If I recall, the 38 is listed as 5-1/4" jaws. The jaw sizes usually tend to deviate a tiny bit from their listed sizes though, for some reason.

Ben-Kinetics picture does not show the locking mechanism. ?How does it work with the two small jaws? ?Possibly a cam acting downwards?

Bens uses a cam, you can see in the bottom right hand corner of the picture the part you turn to lock the rotating small jaws.

I was also going to ask about the layering, but you middle picture has answered it for me. Very, very nice.

One on the bay of Eeeees for 155gbp complete with Coke can for scale.

Bens is a more useful size, looks like the one that was on eBay recently. I've seen them sell for up to 200 quid, mine were cheaper but being at each end of the size range makes them less useful than Bens

Yes, off of eBay for £135. It needs a bit of lateral thinking to work out what bits to rotate where to get it to clamp, but once that's sorted it's very secure. One thing I like is it has a large gap in the centre for through drilling - can clamp a tube horizontally with four contact points, and drill right through it.
