Do many people use this method when butt welding sheet material?
not if the joints not welded well , i normally spot or pug the flanges , as above , often on both pieces of metal , you dont really gain strength in the joggle the strength is is the repair , but it does help with the rigidity of the panel , or part . but its a pita going over radius edges or compound curves , you end up with a selection of dolly to suit , and a lot of hammering or thats what i find to be the case.does the step increase the strength enough to matter ...say for the diy'er that cant turn out perfect work , if you was cutting in the bottom of a door would it help alot with distortion , and you could get inside to paint /seal it
