ok, so i am making a friend a leg (whole backstory is in the projects section) and i think i have had a new idea.
the original plan was to make a clamp shut frame that supported the leg. this has shown up a few problems with regards to clamping the leg in securely. so i have decided it may be best off to shape two sheets into the rough shape of a leg so they close up, clamshell style. then the bracing can be welded on to it securely with minimal weak points.
i have only ever messed about with shaping metal before and only ever done it with aluminium. this will be 1.0-2.0mm sheet steel, i havent measured it properly yet, so i am assuming that it will take a fair bit of hammering. i have only got a basic set of hammers, and no bossing mallet.
i have a rough idea of how i want to do it, but i dont have an anvil. so i was thinking of packing an old shirt or something with soil and using that to beat against to minimise thinning and using a ball pein hammer. would that work?
i know the ideal would be a set of bossing mallets, dolly's and a dolly sack, but they cost and this is just a prototype. it will be padded out so it doesnt need to be perfect. if the design works then i will get the proper stuff as the final version will be made from aluminium.
any tips to make it simple? or things to watch out for?
as i said, i am coming at this from a monkey with a hammer starting point, so any advice is greatly appreciated.
