If it was that wrong it would blow the fuse in plug or trip you mains trip as soon as it was turned on with out even pulling trigger. I take it you have put them on correctly now!
It's possible that has stuffed the relay on the pcb. For what it will cost might be worth replacing. Before you do though check the transformer on the pcb for 240 vAC in and about 12 to 24 vAC out. See pic (ignore white arrows)
