Those of you with experience will already know but for those of you just starting out:- RUSTY WIRE can cause ALL kinds of problems. The MIG may only be used once or twice a year & for the rest of the time it's stored in the garden shed or garage. This ain't good for the wire & it can quickly go rusty; in fact as soon as it is out of the box & handled by your paws it can start to corrode. A few minor spots isn't a problem but if you drag it out from under the stairs once every 6 months & it's all orange STOP! If you try feeding it through your machine it will clog up your torch & cause all kinds of annoying problems - you'll be cursing it & giving up in no time.
If the wire has gone rusty first try taking off the top layers untill you get to the good stuff. If you are still taking the rusty layers off by the time East-Enders has finished, forget it! Bin it & buy another new reel.
The only way to successfully store wire & prevent it from going 'off' is to take it off the machine and store it somewhere dry eg.in the airing cupboard with your home-brew.
