I got into a debate like this on UK Welder and wish I hadn't bothered!
I think a lot of it, is peoples interpetation of Pushing and Pulling. When I did my apprentiship at Babcocks and further training at Fronius in Austria, I was always told that "Proper" mig welding technique is always to push the weld pool. (My defininition of Push, is if you are right handed, you would hold the torch in your right hand and start on the right side of the plate and weld towards the left side of the plate, with a leading torch angle, so imagine that the shielding gas is being aimed in the same direction of travel.)
My definintion of Pulling the weld, is the same as what you do when MMA welding, if your right handed, you would hold Electrode holder in your right handed and start from the left side of the plate and weld towards the right, the electrode being angled back toward the weld pool against the direction of travel.
A lot of this is dependant on torch access though, in some cases its un aviodable to have to pull/drag the weld pool on mig.
