Hi gents!
This is my first post and Im coming to see some advice.
I work as site manager on one hight end project in West London and we struggle to get the balcony handrails completed. The handrails are stainless profiles 1.5 mm thick and the subbie tries to get the bits jointed as the balconies are about 4m long.
First, they sent us a guy that was stick welding the staircase handrails all his career, and the guy was just burning through with his 2.5mm rods. Then the guys cut the handrails and brought the new ones. The same welder tried the TIG for the first time in his life but the weld was just blob on blob and that's it. Another very experienced looking welder told me there is no way to weld such a thin metal with 1mm filling rod.
Then I was told that a professional welder will save the situation. Today he TIG welded for about 4 hours (including 2 breaks) to complete one balcony, see pics.
Now, my question, as Im a novice in TIG. What was he doing wrong? I guess the welds can be slightly better, without questionning his professional level. Whoever, what would you suggest to a novice to get good finish? Thanks for help
