I have just started to knock together a welding positioner over the last couple of days with a few bits i have about.
I had been saving an electric golf trolley for the last couple of years to drive it but chucked it out a month or two ago.
I had a few wheel bearings spare so started with these.
A couple of pics of progress so far.
Turned up a shaft to fit the wheel bearings and made the first mistake.....the bearing journal on the right was in the wrong place it should have been between the two black marks.
So out with the tig and build it up a bit
Machined it back down with a couple of holes that wont really make a difference
On the table end i have incorporated a bit of a spring loaded point type thing so i could centre a plate on it if needed.
It's threaded M20 so i could also add other fittings to centre pipes/tubes etc.
The table is a bit of 12mm plate around 10" diameter.
Put it in the lathe and faced the plate with markings at 10mm intervals.
Drilled and taped a load of holes 1/2" UNC so i can use the clamping set from my milling machine.
I drilled and taped an old 8" chuck to fix to the table with csk bolts.
This pic is how far i have got.......the bearings fit in the large housing with seals each end. This will then have bar welded to it for the mounting and to allow it to pivot on some sort of frame.
There is a brass bush i found sitting on top to connect the earthing to the main shaft. It needs a bit of a bush making to get it to fit.
Not too sure yet whether to use some brush gear of a starter or use an earth strap similar to the one Shox Dr used on his.
I'm still thinking about the drive...i might try and pick up another golf trolley.
