I called in at the builders merchants yesterday to pick up a few pallets to go under the log pile, keep them off the ground, let air circulate, etc.
They said they did not have many as someone had picked up about 50 the day before.
Got me to thinking - i reckon its got to be less effort breaking up pallets for the stove than chopping down trees!
I then looked up some numbers...
The source i read, reckoned most pallets were 15-18kg, and that 1kg gave about 3.5kw of usable heat when burnt.
So, per pallet, that's 57.75kw of heat.
I think i calculated that our home needed about 60kw of heat / day last winter (when we still had holes in the walls etc) so that's one pallet a day.
My trouble will be that Haggins next door will be on the phone to the Environment Agency again as soon as she sees anything unusual happening, regardless of if i only pick up the untreated ones or not!
