The story so far...
Simulated what I will actually have to be doing on the beemer - overhead welds. Tacked it in three places, meant to do short stitches but it was going pretty well (for me) so welded it in one go - 90mm. I found by twisting the nozzle 180 degrees and pulling the weld I could sit adjacent to the danger zone. Beaming a 12v 35w halogen lamp on the work helped as well.
Penetration could be better, but hey, it made my day (I must get out more).
