Hi people.
Ive been reading ALOT of usefull stuff on this forum over the past 3 weeks, but have only just joined up.
Im into the car tuning scene, and have been ever since i was 15 when i helped freshen up an astra belmont.
Anyway, moving on, when i was back at school i did work experiance over at a fabricators / welders over in hoo, in my area. I did really enjoy it and all the blokes there spent alot of time teaching me as much as they could in the short time i was there for.
Im 24 now, i can do basically everything on a car APART from the welding, so im after getting a mig unit.
I have an ancient arc welder that i play with sometimes, i cant remember the name of the unit but its a 180amp unit, minimum of 60amp.
As its too meaty for anything on my car im after purchasing a mig unit, but because i got made redundant from my work about 3 months ago im on a very tight budget. Im looking at spending £150 - £200 max really.
From what ive read on this forum, the clarkes have very good reviews, and it looks like for welding custom exhausts, replacing panels etc im looking at a mig that can go as low as possible.
I wont be welding anything heavy duty, so i personally was looking at the 100?
I very nearly made the mistake of buying a gassless unit, thinking that would be great for outside in the garden etc but then luckily i looked at how sloppy there welds are with the splatter, and i also found out you can only weld mild steel. Well my first project would be a simple front exit exhaust made of stainless for my track car , so that idea went swiftly out the window.
From what ive read, minimum of 30amps, non live torch, and for stainless an argon/co2 mix would be idea? im not really into the idea of renting a bottle so ill be looking at disposables unless i REALLY get into it.
Well theres the huge intro over, any input guys/girls would be much appreciated, as like i said, ive never migged before. Only arc'ed and had a quick play at tigging which didnt look too nice to say the least
Craig.
