Good evening all,
I say Newbie but I have been 'learning' OA welding for a few years, only going back to it when I need something basic welding together. So, no real continuity or serious practice to create a good technique.
I am currently attempting to repair some vintage car wings that are basically sound but holed and damaged in places. Metal is quite thin which doesn't help when one is as inexperienced as I am but I am determined to succeed.
I made myself a small patch complete with wired edge to replace a split/holed/bent section of one wing. I was able to tack weld the piece in place with small widely spaced spots. So far, so good. However, when I try to weld a bead the heat build up is quickly too much to control with the inevitable disastrous results of creating holes and essentially chasing my tail. Examining the inner most flame and despite my best efforts it always seems to be very pointy and just looks 'hot' when I am sure that I should be creating a softer more rounded core. This is borne out by even my better efforts are brittle and take no kind of dressing or working with a hammer.
Can anyone please help me with this problem as any advice would be most welcome. Just to recap I am trying to weld old thin steel wings with patches and also doing some hole filling (5mm - 10mm diameter)
Many thanks.
