I'd been wondering what to do with my tool storage, I've got Clarke heavy duty plus Roll Cab' and chests which are fine for me as these days I can go for days or weeks without having to open a drawer however I had become frustrated at the shallow depth of the step-up chest & top box, the roll cab had much deeper drawers and this depth was what I wold have liked. The roll cab was only a couple of years old (replacing a Canadian made Draper roll cab that I'd had for over 20 years) so I wasn't prepared to change this. Also my bench was due a change as the bench was my grandfathers that he made himself probably 50 plus years ago. I replaced the original wooden top with an old fire door and I've built engines/gearboxes on it and used it for fab' work but I wanted to make my own with a 10mm steel top.
Whilst looking at the Garage Journal forum I found a neat solution, the builder known as Stevo incorporated roll cabs into a bench. His idea inspired my bench design.
Using Word I came up with a few designs based on the room I had, settling on the first one.
3D
I ordered the steel having it delivered to work where I processed it to a workable size.
The cutting and welding began
The legs have articulating adjustable feet to allow for an uneven floor, these are mounted into 12mm plates on the leg bottom.
First 'bay' nearly completed
