Hi,
I’m a hobby welder, been doing it for about five years now, almost exclusively on car restoration projects. My MIG welding on sheet metal body panels is of reasonable quality and I do love the process of cutting out old rusty holes and welding in solid, shiny new metal. However, today I got a real fright! A spatter somehow got into my helmet (full face LCD auto-dimming, a Sealey one I think) and just missed my right eye hitting the skin just next to my eye. Now i did have this once before but I was working in a confined space under a car and can see how a spark could bounce from behind me back into helmet but this time I was next to the car welding in a wheel arch with nothing behind me so I’m a bit bemused. From that point on I had a pair or safety glasses on under my helmet but this effects the way the helmet comes down and is less than ideal, plus the fact I wear reading glasses for close-up work so it’s all a bit cramped. Just wondering if this an occupational hazard and how you pro’s deal with it? Thanks in advance for suggestions.
