I've put this in the projects section but to be honest I haven't done any work on it in about 5 years.
I took this picture today.
It's a 1971 Ford D Series LWB 10 ton tipper, 10 ton is the load capacity, the lorry weighs just under 6 ton so the all up weight is 16 ton.
I found the lorry sat in the middle of a field about 15 years ago where it had been sat for about 5 years already, I chatted to the farmer about it and they used to use it for hauling grain until one day the YTS lad decided to try and get it into 5th gear high and stalled it, when they went to restart it they couldn't get it out of gear so it sat there in the middle of the pasture with nettles growing around it.
I broached whether he wanted to get rid of it and he said if I took it away I could have it for free as he was fed up of looking at it.
I took my tools up there, removed the top of the gearbox and straightened a bent gear selector, chucked a pair of batteries onto it, primed the diesel through and flicked the starter and after about 10 seconds of cranking she fired up.
It has the Ford straight 6 turbo engine and it ran as sweet as a nut if a little over fueled. The drive the 2 miles home was a little scary as the air brakes system was only just keeping pressure but I had a mate in his tractor following on behind hooked up with a large chain just in case it ran away with me.
The jobs I have done on it before my enthusiasm waned are:
Replaced the Custom Cab with a later cab which was in a lot better condition, I've kept the Custom Cab panels to put back on.
Removed all the brake lines (it has a full air braking system, and made replacements.
Made a new air filter housing and a new radiator expansion tank.
Had the air reciever pressure tested and then sand blasted and painted.
Replaced the radiator (accident with a prop when changing the cab put paid to the old one ).
Needle scaled, primed and painted the whole of the nearside chassis and wheels.
Replaced the diaphragms in the brake actuators.
And that was about as far as I got before my enthusiasm waned and it got put onto the back burner.
Too many projects and not enough time but it's definitely one I want to finish as some stage.
