I have a Crompton Parkinson 1hp motor that I believe has let all it's smoke out. I was turning a bowl taking very light cuts on the wood lathe when it tripped the RCD. Once I reset the RCD, the Weg VFD had error E000 on it which can have several causes including a short between phases. I reset it and everything was tickety boo for about 20 minutes then there was a pop and the RCD and MCB went, a slight smell of electrical burning ensued. I was using the motor just above 50Hz at the time so it wasn't a cooling issue associated with old motors and VFDs at low Hz
I'm not sure if it's motor or VFD yet but given the motor was second hand and out of a Boxford 280T I suspect the motor. It was the highest power small format 3ph motor I could find. Modern format motors of a decent size will not fit in the cabinet otherwise I would just buy one. Besides, I've changed the bearings.
I haven't had time to look at it in detail yet as the cabinet is very tight, I need to lift the lathe off the base to get at it to do further testing. This is the motor in question before I fitted it.
And the label, I hate these dot matrix jobbies that are almost undecipherable.
It's a cold plate VFD so it doesn't have a fan to suck in wood dust. I bolted it to large aluminium plates with a couple of heatsinks and it is bolted to the inside of the lathe body and runs as cool as a cucumber. All you can tell from the outside that is has a VFD is the chicken head knob for speed control next to the on/off switch
Here it is in on the base awaiting the lathe to be lifted onto it.
and how it was just before it went pop!
Anyway, to cut a long story short, assuming it is the motor when I take it to bits, anybody used Rochdale rewinds before? They are the closest and I can probably get the FIL to drop it off and pick it up, I'm still awaiting my driver's licence.
Cheers
Andy
