I was looking for a fun, sensible, slightly older car to use as daily transport and saw this locally.
A chap not too far away had bought a pair of matching Estates, stripped them both without labeling anything, sanded the shell ready for painting - and left the bare metal exposed hence the surface rust.
He then let a local youngster cut the floors out of the cars, and used one of the shells to teach the youngster how to weld. The results are not pretty !
1 engine was stripped to see what it needed and the pieces were left outside in the rain, the other engine was painted and put into a shed.
Common sense went out of the window when I viewed it and I agreed to buy the "nearly complete" car so we spent an afternoon sorting the pile of bits.
I can now honestly say I own a Mk1 Escort.
Now it's been delivered I've made a start to see what it needs, or what's not included with the kit :
It took about 4 days sorting the bits and loosely putting it back together to see what needed fixing or replacing.
Both rear light lenses were smashed before I got the car (they were put into storage - with heavy bits of engine on top of them) - I've now got replacements.
The front exhaust downpipe is missing - my local motor factors told me they could order one. After 2 months of delays they said they couldn't.
I'm amazed that there's nothing else missing, and the car look ready for MOT once the floorpans have been replaced.
The chap plans to cut the roof off for the other stripped shell to make a pickup for blasting around his farm, it's his car so it's his choice.
