I need to make a fork in the end of a piece of 15mm 303 stainless bar. It should be 6mm wide and 25mm deep. I have a Super 7 lathe with a non-swivel vertical slide, ER 32 collet chuck and a square collet block. My first thought is to hold the piece sideways in the collet block in the slide vice and mill a slot to half depth, then turn the block over and slot the other side, hoping the two slots would join up. I have seen other things such as side and face cutters and 6mm slotting saws but I don't think my lathe has the power to drive stuff like that. Any tips on how to go about this much appreciated.
