Occasionally I had to visit the firms rod mill to carry out checks on the reheating furnace. The stock was 4” square billets & it was reduced in stages to varying wire sizes. By the end of the rolling process the rod was flying down the mill. Sometimes a mismatch occurred between the rolling stand speeds leading to a “cobble” with red hot rod flying everywhere. The mill had refuges where you could shelter from the flying rod until the mill could be stopped. Very impressive to watch preferably from a safe distance.
