It looks like I will need to make a new feed screw for my CVA cross-slide.
The one that came on the machine isn't too bad in terms of backlash, but it isn't straight.
I think it has more than one bend and I don't feel very confident about straightening it.
At the far end the run-out is about 20 thou.
So, for starters can anyone tell me what grade of steel I should be looking for?
The nut is bronze BTW.
It will be an interesting machining job.
Total length just over 19".
10" of 3mm pitch LH thread with an OD of 0.622"
I have not established whether this is Tr or Acme form yet but my guess is that it's a hybrid: Acme form with metric pitch!
At the handle end there's 7" of 7/16" dia with three Woodruff key seats. This was ground originally.
By chance I have an imperial screw for the same machine. It's also 0.622" dia but 1/8" pitch and very worn.
Picture is the imperial version but to the eye they both look identical.
Any suggestions (polite that is ) appreciated.
