Putting in the godmode in ...got more scraping to do on the compound slide....and another gear done...mellor lathe compound...big vintage Harrison compound slide..
Today. Installed gib strip and set the saddle. Install front and rear screw carriers. Also was going through the spares pile and happened to find the original power feed leaver. Mine was replaced previously by someone else but result in finding the original
Finished the day off with temporary fitting the cross slide screw that Pete made many moons ago. The cross slide engagement works with the smaller gear that has a internal taper and a taper Bush. You turn the star handle that pushes the Bush into the taper on the gear...the gear and Bush were missing off the machine originally. I brought two more mellor lathes for spares that had all the missing components.
Also taking the old mellor lathe tumbler handle off and will be placing it on the restored lathe as its bigger..dont know if anyone knows but there was a company called birmel that made parts (upgrades) for mellor. One bit is they had a 16 tooth output tumbler gear instead of the 20 tooth currently fitted. This gave finer feed rate..I will be indeed looking in to this later..also the birmel had a two speed bendix gearbox that sat at the left side rear of the machine and was operated via a leaver that protruded underneath the front of the drip tray..chances of locating the 2 speed bendix box is a no go...but something that could be fabricated...
Only a couple of bits done today as I having one of them days. Been working on the tailstock. Hand wheel was badly rusted where it has sat underneath the bench. Managed to remove all the rust and pitting. It's in for a fresh coat of paint. I got a really nice finish on the tailstock hand wheel meaning I am going to have to do the carriage hand wheel to match it...
