@mtt.tr has kindly lent me his Fixed Steady, meaning I can get on with the input shaft for the Meddings Drill.
It is bent at one end so the centre can not be trusted and it will end up distorting somewhat during welding anyway.
It has two bearing journals that can be assumed to be straight an true.
So my plan.
I clock a piece of ⅝” silver steel (same size as bearing journals) in the 4 jaw.
I then bring the fixed steady up to the clocked silver steel and set the fingers of the steady rest concentric with the spindle to lightly drag on the bar.
Now open the steady and move it to where it needs to sit on the shaft.
Sound good so far?
The 5/8” bearing journals aren’t very long, so I can’t hold the journal and clock it. So I plan to loosen two of the jaws on the 4 jaw. Remove the silver steel and replace with the meddings shaft, tighten the two jaws up onto the bearing journal. I should be pretty close.
Now shut the top finger of the steady to the shaft is held in the 4 jaw and supported 6” from the chuck by the steady rest.
Im just playing this over in my head before starting so I know what the plan is.
