Your 10k quote for the frame will probably be because if you're wanting everything perfect, you really need a jig making first to stop everything shifting and moving during welding, the cheaper quote is probably just to build it up freestanding from flat table, which isn't as accurate but might be good enough for what you're doing. It also depends on the material, there's a big difference in price if it's using certified T45 or rather some cheap and nasty basic CDS from the lowest bidder in manchester...
WRT the cage, I'd put an a-pillar bar in whilst you're doing it, and gusset the door and roof cross and the rear cage - it's becoming compulsary in some of the European events now so it'll trickle across at some point I'd imagine.
Yup the cheaper quote he said that it all goes out of skew and he would need the engine and parts so he can work the errors around them.
I didn't draw in gussets because the fabricator was goingto put hem in without drawings, he just gussets the hell out of his frames.
