I'm looking to make a splitter to fit my mini digger, but need a suitable hydraulic cylinder. Ideally a double acting cylinder with a minimum of 100mm internal bore, and a stroke of 400mm.
Has anyone got similar they would like to sell?
Thats a handy looking machine. I have a 8ton Thor 2 speed vertical splitter which is a fantastic machine, but i want to build a splitter with at least 20ton of force so as i can use a multi cross head on it, and push the wood through it, like this one.
Lucky you! wood has been a bit scarce the last year due to breaking my ankle had to buy some peat to burn along with the logs to get me through the year. p.s. check on fleabay for a cylinder sure there is a guy that makes them to your requirement at a reasonable price. Also check northern tool I know the American side do hydraulics not sure about the uk branch.
I can sympathise with you there sam, broke my own ankle twice in one year and ended up with 9 screws and a plate lol, fecking motorbikes. It takes a fair old while to feel confident with it again.
I broke mine in nine pieces they managed to screw one side together but the other was in a mess and had to let it set on its own was in plaster for 2 months. Same thing mucking about on a motox bike out the back of the house.
Did you make that yourself Sam I have been tossing a few ideas around in my head for one of them I was going to make it vertical and also wanted to use it as a press I would be driving mine from the tractor but good haven't quite come up with a planned yet
Yes saw something similar in the states a few years ago you can split on the vertical as well if you look closely you will see an R clip when removed with the pin it will pivot.
Still not convinced on log splitters especially for small stuff as i think i am just as quick with an axe by the time you have set it in the machine and waited for it to reset.
For bigger and knotty stuff i can see the use but for pine logs can't see the advantage
Willing to put that to one the test! recon I would split 2 1/2 to 3 times more wood even pine which I dont burn as there is too much resin and can cause problems within the chimney. Have an axe if you are up for a challenge will even supply the wood and venue. p.s. I keep the wood.
Around here everything is red oak or hickory. I have an oak tree that was 100' high and 3' in diameter that fell down 2 years ago. I have a 5-pound maul and it still just bounces off the wood. Something about the tree though; it was hit by lightning, seems the core was petrified in the process. Can be done with wedges, but they still have to be pounded almost all the way through.
Nice work Sam, nice piece of engineering there. Shenion, when a tree gets hit by lightening the temperature is so high it actually boils the sap, which in turn causes internal splits/shakes leaving the tree useless for furniture grade lumber.
Hay thats a nice splitter sam! I got one similar but it doesn't hav a tow hitch, gotta lug it around. Maybe i will put a hitch on it and save me some hard work! Here is another splitter i have, not one I made tho bought it like this. Its an old Ford 4000 industrial tracto with front forks. The splitter is one of the old legs that were used to raise the machine when digging. They just made up a table and an a-frame with a splitting knife on the end. Still uses the same control valve connected by a rod to the side of the table. Uses tractor hydraulics too so high flow rate means quick splitting :-) its old but still works.
Got meself a new ram today, 4' bore running from the digger it should give 17+ tons, now the fun begins !!
Thanks to Principle parts in dungannon for supplying it at a super price..
