gents,

going to be buying my own inverter soon as want to improve my arc skills, did the beginner 10night (1 a week) course that FAS do but still a lot of learning to do

have been looking around and don't see any evening courses suitable as I am working by day full time

any suggestions on an inverter, going to go to local hire shop and buy what they have I think, easy service if something goes wrong, awkward enough to return them if bought on line from UK, based in Ireland

or can any good electrician fix an inverter?

local hire shop have Kuhtreiber, Paraweld, Sealey for reasonable money

EWM and fronius for more


am fairly good on the flat but need to improve skills and techniqes in all other positions

what material should I buy to practice on?

was thinking of getting ~150mm pipe 4mm thick maybe? cut into ~20mm lengths and bevelled ready or is there an easy method of bevelling it myself other than hacking it with the angle grinder

should get good value out of these samples as would allow keyhole run with a 2.5mm at ~80amps DC and then capping with 3.2mm at ~120amps DC

anyone know of any videos/DVDs or books for instrucion for someone like me at intermediate level?

or can any good electrician fix an inverter?

No. An electrician would probably see a mass of electronics and stop there. In any case he'd need the service notes and circuit diagram (they are usually not easy to get) and equipment such as an oscilloscope which an electrician probably wouldn't have. Fixing inverters tends to be a specialised business and quite expensive compared to the cost of a new one. This is the big problem with inverters.

It's well worth considering the length of guarantee they give and how likely the seller is to be able to live up to it, or want to live up to it.

i have that have used and abused it over the last 12 months still perfect. this ones dual voltage with a high duty cycle

this one is only 220 volts with a poorer duty cycle but better value for money if ur not going to be using it on a daily basis.

150mmx4mm pipe at 20mm long would be not ideal as the sample pieces will get very hot and certainly not make things easy.
if you want to buy something to practice on i would start with 40/50x6 for fillet welds, vertical up and underhand joints, and some 80x10/8 for single/double v joint practice. the flat will be alot easier to prep into a v than the pipe sections. once these are mastered try some pipe but it will require alot of practice before its worth trying on pipe.
get some 9" grinding wheels a box of 7016/8 and get started.
put some pics of how you are getting on, on here and you may get a few pointers

I presume its Walsh engineering that you're buying from as that is only place I have seen Kuhtreiber for sale there is another welding supplier not to far from you in croom just goggle welding suppliers croom there is a few of his machines around me and the owners seem to like them they are Chinese but he has a supply of boards for them he also is pretty cheap for rods around €40 for 15 kilos and there good-quality
you could also try Kilkenny welding supplies in Clonmel

unless you have belt grinder then the only way to bevel is an anger grinder

saw the kuhtreiber for sale on donedeal a shop in clonmel selling it €400+VAT 100% duty cycle at 125amp, went to visit today salesman told me 52rods 3.2mm rods they burnt one after the other with their kuhtreiber kitten at full blast ~160amp and it never cut out,

I think the kuhtreiber comes in the same shell as the EWM pico machine looking at it

a TIG kit for the machine would be ~220

i usse the 6mm thick angle grinder blades but i dont much v butt work, the trouble with v butt practice is it takes alot of prep work and setting up, only to find you make a right mess of it and have to start the process again.
practice makes perfect though
