Hello, new here.
I have some wheels to refurb. They have base/lacquer inner faces but the outer face is machined alloy. I would guess they were etched, base coated and then the faces machined on a lathe of some sort giving fine grooves. Then clear coated.
The lacquer has started to fail in places around the rim and the centres.
I saw some 1k etching lacquer but the paint supplier i visited recommended using 2k lacquer (which i needed anyway).
Will this stick well to the alloy?
I have yet to decide how i will prep as stripping the whole wheel would create a lot of work and masking all the spokes to re-do the base would be a mare. I am going to use stripper carefully on the face area where the lacquer has failed and key the rest. Not sure if I will get a clean finish between the stripped areas and the remaining lacquer but will have to see. I cannot rub down the alloy because of the machined lines. Some wire wool might work clean the alloy behind the failed areas and blend into the existing.
A bit awkward all round but suggestions welcome. So the inside of the spokes is silver paint/clear coat and the face of the wheel lacquer on bright machined alloy.
