I had a load of scrap timber I wanted to split up into kindling & sell. My only problem is I'm like lightening with an axe - I never strike the same place twice. So me trying to split the kindling with an axe is very slow & dangerous.
After a quick google I made this after seeing it on youtube.
I had a spare full size hatchet head & I welded 2 lengths of 40x40 box either side to keep it from falling over. To use it you set the bottom edge of the wood on the axe blade & hit the top edge of the wood with a heavy hammer. It worked extremely well, almost too well at times. Several times the wood split too easily & the hammer followed through & hit the blade.
I cut the timber into lengths with the chop saw & then split it with my new tool. A few hours work over 2 nights & I now have this.
Ten 20kg meal bags filled with lighters & I still have enough timber for at least another 10!
The only thing I would advise anyone making one of these is to mount it on a large plate or a plank as it tends to move around during use.
