I finally did it! Yesterday I mail-ordered a Millermatic 135 and I'm hoping to gain enough proficiency to be able to make good welds on things like angle iron and steel of thicknesses to 0.25" (+/- ) or so. Some 40 years ago I had a short introductory welding class in college (gas and electric) and I have a small ox/acetlyene unit that I've done brazing with from time to time. I realize how much I've limited myself by not learning this fine art long ago. Now I'll be able to reinforce workbenches, build sturdy shelves for my shop, etc. I'm a amateur radio operator and I also have a metal shop with lathe and milling machine. My next purchase is going to be a plasma cutter - perhaps ordering it will come as soon as this weekend. I'm a retired eye doctor and I'm used to doing pretty fine work. Undergraduate training was in Electronic Engineering and have always enjoyed working with my hands. Past projects have delt with the construction of model stationary steam engines, etc. Now the world opens up to ?? who knows what ???
I'm sure you'll be seeing me posting newbie type questions in the near future. BTW, I purchased a 80 cu ft 75/25 mix cylinder for the unit here locally today. Got two spools of 2lb wire for steel too. Ordered a Miller helmet (Model XLT?) along with the MIG unit.
