My relatively old HP desktop has two USB ports on the front panel which, on occasion, is not enough. It's irked me that there are 3 USB headers on the motherboard each with two ports, of which only one is used. I decide to do something about that.
First inspect the USB/Audio panel at the front
It comes apart easily. I found a cheapish one on eBay which arrived today.
It was dismantled to give me a spare pair of USB jacks.
The new cables had the insulation pared back which the original pair did not have. Without doing this the whole lot was too large to cram into the housing. I trimmed the sheath, I cut the braid.
WHY! You need the screen, Muppet!!!
All is not lost, twist off, pare the outer a little more and solder and, with heatshrink, it's all fine
Then stuff it all back into the housing, Et Voila! I now have 4 USB ports on my front panel.
