I'm slowly restoring a motorhome and when I bought it this water heater came with it like this. I would like to try and repair it but i'm unsure about the best way to go about it. I'm a good mig and stick welder in steel but tbh I don't know a great deal about other metals and welding processes.
To me it looks like it was originally soldered or brazed. I'm hoping it's solder so I can close the gap up, solder it, then put a plate over the top and solder around that for extra security? If I do that would any type of alloy be ok or perhaps mild steel to plate it. Is all solder the same or are there different types for different metals?
I know repairing it is a bodge but it's the best option at the moment as I don't know if it's worth replacing the part as the rest of the water heater might be no good. Plus I don't want to buy a new one yet as all the water system layout is new and I would rather test it on the old one than risk damaging a new one.
