Hi, As far as the class 1 goes there are two options, you either renew it or you don't. As I understand it at 65 when you renew your licence and it comes back they can drop classes off like B+E, if you haven't renewed your class 1. You need to check it and if it's not there, contact DVSA and they will re-instate it. If you don't query it they think you don't need it and it's lost, someone on here found that out the hard way.

As far as I know you had to attend a cpc course to keep your entitlement. How do you register ? with who ? I have never heard that you need to register ??? I have a class one, it is worrying that they can just remove it, without contacting you I know they have been doing it with M/cycles ( illegally) over the last few years, a bit strange surely they cant just remove part of your license ?
VOSA changed their minds about this in 2011, that's why you still get people trotting out their previous experiences with them getting fined under the old rules.
The trailers actual gross weight is what counts now, so if at roadside check they find a trailer with max weight over the towing car's capacity they're obliged to weigh it to confirm legality.
They're not being jobsworth, it really is their job!
Cut and pasted:
It used to be VOSA policy to interpret the law in a way that made it illegal to tow if the combined plated weight of a vehicle and trailer exceeded the vehicle manufacturers specified towing capacity, even if the trailer was empty.
This change is a few years old now, but the web and the rumour mill is still full of examples of people being fined due to this ridiculous interpretation, so I thought I'd post my findings here in case any one else was as confused as I was.
I sold my LandRover so rang my local Ivor Williams dealer about de-rating my trailer to comply, and was told that VOSA had changed its mind about this, they sent me this VOSA memo which they had received in clarification.
Vosa Document Trailer Weights.pdf
------------------------------------------------------------------
Just one example of the miss-information still on current websites, by people who really should be up to speed on this.
" Although trailers with overrun brakes can weigh up to 3500kg gross, actual maximum weights are set by the specifications of the vehicle that is doing the towing. The law says you must not exceed the Gross Train Weight that the manufacturer has set for the towing vehicle. Look in the vehilce handbook or on a plate riveted to the vehicle to find this figure. You then have to subtract the weight of the towing vehicle (including fuel, driver, passengers, luggage or cargo) from the Gross Train Weight. The amount you are left with is the maximum theoretically-possible weight of trailer that can be towed legally. REMEMBER, the law does not care whether the trailer is empty or packed to the roof with bricks, what counts is the plated gross vehicle weight of the trailer. "

@Justme
Do you know what the law is, if the gross weight of the trailer is 2700kg, but the car can only legaly tow 1600kg.
If the trailer is empty or only got something light in it and it only weighs say 1200kg, can you legaly tow it, or would the police go by the gross weight of the trailer.
I have seen a few people on the internet saying you can and others saying you cant.
Hope that makes sense ?
Thanks Owen
No you cant, I have hgv licence up to 7.5 ton, I could get in an uncoupled artic truck and drive it as un laden weight say 6.5 ton....but I cant, can you see the logic. If your car can tow 1600 kg the trailer cannot be stamped to be more than 1600kg gross(trailer and load)Sorry, newer trailer laws are a pain, especially for self employed guys.

I know my mate let his license slip at 70 ? regarding the b+e, for his m/ caravan trailer and car he reapplied and it was reinstated.
So to clarify, if you have a vehicle with a unladen weight of 2500kg and gvw 3500kg, and a gross train(MAM) of say 5100kg you can legally tow a trailer if your truck is loaded to its max of 3500kg, that weighs no more than 1600kg loaded Although the trailer is actualled plated to 3500kg.gross
or conversley you could have your trailer loaded and truck unloaded as long as GTW wasnt exceeded.(that makes sence to me as no vehicle/trailer is exceeding its design weight)
I did cpc a while back and farmer guy asked if he could tow a ifor behind his truck and the tuitor reckoned not because the two gross figures went over the allowance allowed for the towing vehicle...all very contradictory!
No, I am not talking the 70 age limit you saidIf you are on about loosing stuff at 70 then yes they can as its always been that way & if your read your licence terms you would see it. To keep them at 70+ you need to take the medicals & inform DVLA.
I am asking where do you register then ?the pre 01-01-97 so that IF you do not register that you are using the BE (and all the other extras) you loose them.
