Any age you like is the answer I would think. Here is a picture of Jack, sticking weld :-)
I am helping a few guys get something together and none of them are young anymore. This chap, because of his advanced years (76+) asked me if he could help. "How about helping out with the painting?" (I thought this would be an easy get out for him) PAINT! PAINT! I can't bloody paint, I was a welder! Welder? I have just the job for you....
I actually had to get a move on with the layouts as he could really boogie with this thing. Yes, there are a few things wrong here, he is using an auto helmet as a shield (can't get on with that newfangled stuff), no he is not wearing gauntlets (had cancer twice, bit of burn won't kill me) and so on. You just have to go with it I suppose.
Chatting to him, he started out using "Argon Arc" years ago, big water cooled torches and a foot pedal to strike the high frequency (some of you may laugh, but some of us on here are old enough to remember that that was what it was called in the beginning, Argon Arc and it was Magic!}. He told me he only did MMA years later and everything he did was X-Ray'ed. Reeled off a very impressive list of stuff he had worked on. The welds were really spot on and when he had finished he confided in me that he hadn't picked up a stick welder in over twelve years.
I must say, I was pleased to hear his comments about my set, he was really impressed with it, "could have made some cash with that back in the day....." All piece work you see. AND tested.
