Tufty, it totally depends on the job. Not really any difference between ac and dc, far more on the joint type, weld size, tungsten size, whatever's on there already. In principle the tungsten should be as close to the work as you can manage without touching down, and not too far away that the arc is too large and uncontrollable. Ceramic... well I tend to use a no 6 unless there's a good reason for using something different.
