You don't want to have the machine rollers slipping, ever. It damages the wire. As long as the motor in the gun is turning, it will be helping, it's not a complex problem, but even if the motor in the gun doesn't turn as fast as the wire rollers in the set off load, it will still be assisting once the tension is on the pressure rollers and the wire is going through.
Put it this way, I can't feed one millimetre wire 8 metres down the torch if I leave the motor wires disconnected, but as soon as they are, the system feeds perfectly.
