Hi, I am Seb. Thanks for letting me join the forum.
I run a boat maintenance business with my partner. We work mainly on narrowboats in East London. I taught my self to stick weld a couple of years back and am now welding frequently as part of our work. I've got an Arcgen 165sp which has served me well and is very reliable.
Lately I have been doing a lot of verticals and overheads and I thought maybe a mig welder would be more suitable. Now I am trying to gather some more info on what is what with mig welding before I buy one.
My main considerations are power supply, type of gas, how many amps output I need and duty cycle. I have a 6000w generator and would ideally want to work off that. Our work environment limits us to fully inert gases. I'd normally work with 3mm to 6mm mild steel on a daily basis, but would need to be able to do butt welds on 8mm. The arcgen has a 100% duty cycle with electrodes of 3.2mm or less and I'd ideally like to get close to that when welding 5mm mild steel.
It may be impossible to tick all these boxes, but I was hoping people might be able to point me in the direction of some machines worth looking at.
