Hi all, long time lurker who has benefited greatly from the wealth of knowledge and advice on this forum. I am a hobbyist, interested in all things metalwork and fabrication. Current project is a mini electric go kart for my kids, essentially a scaled down Lotus 7.
Today I have been machining a shaft coupling on my Axminster BV20 lathe when the tail stock clamp bolt broke.
Easy fix I thought, but when welding the two halfs back together, I smelt burning and smoke was pouring out the back of the lathe. Essentially the earth core has heated up and melted. RCD in the house tripped. The flex is a sorry mess and has melted some of the insulation in the other cores behind the switch panel. Lathe and mig all still work.
Lathe was plugged in, but off. mig Welder plugged into same circuit. Lathe sits on end of welding bench. Welder seemed to be only working at half power!
Any thoughts / input much appreciated.
