Another reply with a bit more info...It's been posted to the OP in the facebook group
Hi Andy,
So basically the machine was a product lift. It lifts boxes of product from one factory line to the higher line. The machine stopped working and my husband called an engineer, they were busy to he went to check it out. He's a manager so his job is to keep the line running, he felt it was his duty to atleast find out what the issue was so he could report it to the engineer. There are huge wheeled ladders all around, so he moved one over so he could take a look at the top of the lift and see if he could see a blockage. He had his hand resting on a ledge. The lift came down crushing his hand, obviously he had no idea this would happen; he simply wanted to observe, he had no intention of fixing or touching anything, he believes he was being safe, working at height etc, he has does many health and safety courses.
I believe the company is very official in their training and health and safety so I assume they fully legit from there end. (I say assume because I haven't asked my husband)
Since the accident they have added guarding at the top now, he has also had his investigation meeting where he was specifically investigated for gross misconduct for a health and safety matter, he's waiting to hear but is genuinely terrified of losing his job.
I suppose they will say that he shouldn't have been up there, but people look up there all the time to check for blockages, and obviously if he thought for a second his hand was in a moving peice he wouldn't have put his hand there
