My house boiler is an ancient Myson Velaire; probably not many of them left, but this one has been very reliable.
There is a snag with it which I refer to as “Hard Starts” i.e. when the stat calls for the burner to light, the spinner starts and (judging the interference on the kitchen radio) there’s sparking, then a couple of seconds later the oil ignites. The problem is that sometimes the ignition seems to occur after sufficient oil is present to create quite a thump when it ignites; you can hear it around the house.
However, it doesn’t always do this – it seems to depend on who serviced it last. So, for the last two years, it was running with very smooth start-ups, then it was serviced and now we are back with hard starts. I mentioned this to the last service guy and he said he would fit the exact same jet as it was already using, but it hasn’t worked out well.
Now, if different service guys were using different jets, I could understand this, but if they are all using the same jets, what else could be changed during a service that would affect how smoothly the burner ignites? Any advice appreciated.
