Hey Guys,
Tonight i decided to use up a few pieces of angle steel that had been sat in the corner of the shed. Powder coated red, i ground off the paint to bright shiny steel, and bevelled each corner around 45 degrees and tacked them both up with a 3mm open root.
Where you see a cross section divet in the middle of the metal pieces is the divider of two halfs, One was set for a vertical up open root, the other half, a horizontal butt open root.
5mm thick steel, i used 3.2mm 6013 running a around 90 -100 amps holding a rather tight arc..
Vertical looks not so good... i know why...the rods burn up faster once half used, and i had to move quicker as the heat rose into the above metal, i paused briefly to allow the edges burn in, then whipped across to the other side.
Horizontal was a little wavy, but i didn't keyhole, i used a 'whip and pause' technique and allowed the previous weld to freeze a little before progressing.
The last picture you will see is a horizontal open root butt weld with a 5 mm root! I weaved and paused each side, but i managed it!
Let me know what you think!
P.S they were all peelers too
