The tc on the d2 is terrible....
I wouldn't entirely disagree with that statement however with no centre difflocks it is better with TC than without. Personally I do prefer manual difflocks to TC. Could be worse, if I had a P38 some of them only have TC on 1 axle not all 4 wheels
Tyres and technique also play a big part, was supporting an Endurance GB horse endurance event last year, one of the support crew had a D3 and got stuck on one of the mountain trails, she had no off tarmac experience and no idea how to drive her D3 when it gets slippery and rough. Rather than tow her out with the D2 I jumped in and gave her a quick lesson in how to drive off road and I was pleasantly surprised with how capable a D3 could be in the right hands even with TC and no manual difflock
From a consumer POV TC just does it for them and they would probably get further with TC than if it had CDL. Most peeps have no idea what all the levers do in a proper 4x4 so just get confused whereas if it's all automagic they stand a better chance of making forward progress
Had a Passat V6 Synchro a few years back, didn't try it in mud but slippery wet grass and snow were a no brainer for it, pity it didn't have low box
My D2 is an 03 model so doesn't have the CDL guts in the Transfer box, only option is to swap the transfer box to get CDL. I do have one in my pile of spares and if I end up keeping the D2 then it's going to get fitted
